Why pattern recognition matters before remediation
Technical debt examples are not academic. When you can name what you are looking at, you can estimate its cost, communicate it to non-technical stakeholders and sequence a remediation plan. Without that vocabulary, every conversation about the codebase becomes a vague discussion of “quality” that leads nowhere.
Across the codebases we have assessed at Eden Technologies, eight patterns appear consistently. They appear in startups with two engineers and in enterprise systems with 200. They appear in Java, Python, PHP, Node.js and Ruby. The technology stack changes. The patterns do not.
These are not isolated issues. Each pattern has a measurable impact on delivery speed, incident rate and engineering morale. Each one compounds the cost of every other pattern present in the same system. Understanding technical debt examples in concrete terms is the starting point for any serious remediation effort.
Patterns 1 to 4: structural problems
Pattern 1: The God Class. A single class that handles too many responsibilities. The classic example is a UserService that validates input, sends emails, writes to the database, calculates billing and manages authentication, all in a single file with several hundred methods. Changing anything in it requires understanding all of it. Testing a single behavior requires instantiating the entire graph of dependencies. The code smell is a class with high cyclomatic complexity, many dependencies and methods that do not share data.
**Pattern 2: **Spaghetti code. Code where the flow of control jumps between functions, classes and modules in ways that are difficult to follow or predict. The canonical spaghetti code example is a system where a single user action triggers a chain of callbacks, event handlers and side effects that spans eight files and cannot be traced without running the debugger. The cause is usually iterative feature addition without refactoring. The symptom is that developers cannot describe what happens when they trigger a specific operation.
Pattern 3: Tight coupling and missing abstractions. Business logic that calls database queries directly, HTTP clients hardcoded inside domain objects, configuration values embedded in function bodies. Tightly coupled code cannot be tested in isolation and cannot be changed without touching multiple layers simultaneously. It is one of the most reliable predictors of high incident rates because a change in one layer propagates failures unpredictably to others.
Pattern 4: Duplicated code. The same logic implemented in three different places, with slight variations. This seems harmless until a bug is found in one copy and fixed there, while the other two copies continue to fail silently. Duplication is often a symptom of teams working in parallel without shared conventions or code review processes. It inflates codebase size, splits test coverage and multiplies the cost of any future change to the shared logic.
Patterns 5 to 8: operational and process problems
**Pattern 5: **Dead code. Functions, classes, modules or entire files that exist in the codebase but are never called. Dead code examples include: feature flags that are always false, migration scripts that ran once and were never deleted, commented-out blocks left for “safety,” and entire microservices that were replaced but not removed. Dead code creates cognitive load, inflates dependency trees and can contain security vulnerabilities that no one monitors because no one knows the code is there.
Pattern 6: Missing or inadequate tests. A codebase with low test coverage is one where every change is a gamble. Teams with inadequate test coverage spend more time on manual regression testing, take longer to deploy and suffer more incidents per release. The code smell is not just low coverage numbers. It is tests that assert nothing meaningful, tests that always pass regardless of what the code does, or integration tests that take forty minutes to run and are routinely skipped.
Pattern 7: Outdated dependencies. Libraries and frameworks running versions that are two or three major releases behind. Outdated dependencies introduce security vulnerabilities, create incompatibilities with newer tooling and can make it impossible to adopt modern practices. One common example: a Node.js application running on a version that reached end-of-life and is no longer receiving security patches. The cost of upgrading grows with every release cycle that is skipped.
Pattern 8: No observability. A system that generates no structured logs, no distributed traces and no meaningful metrics is a system that no one can reason about in production. When an incident occurs, the team cannot determine what caused it without adding instrumentation, which requires a deployment, which takes time. Lack of observability is often invisible until something goes wrong, at which point it multiplies the mean time to recovery by a factor of three or more.
The technical debt impact on business
These eight patterns do not stay in the engineering department. Their technical debt impact on business is direct and quantifiable.
Slower delivery means slower time to market. When a product change that should take three days takes three weeks because of structural debt, a competitor that does not have the same debt problem will get there first.
Higher incident rates consume engineering capacity. A team spending thirty percent of its sprints on unplanned incident response is a team that is thirty percent less capable of building product. One client we supported reduced monthly production incidents from 40 to 4 through targeted structural remediation. That is the equivalent of multiple weeks of engineering capacity recovered per quarter.
Recruitment and retention suffer. Engineers with options do not stay in codebases that make them feel ineffective. High attrition in engineering is frequently a symptom of accumulated technical debt, not compensation gaps.
